Dead Bored...

I had a late class today and it was a good long rest that night. As usual my other housemates were up early in the morning. Had a short conversation with them as i was preparing myself for class which goes like this........

Me: Morning man!, what are u doin this early in the morning?
Housemate (1) was playing computer games while he was taking a break from his studies.
Housemate (1): Morning!, arghh..damn! the opponent just scored a goal. Look at this, everytime when you come in, the opponent scores.

From that conversation, my housemate (1) used a Post Hoc Fallacy on me.

The conversation went on.....

Me: Haha, maybe you're just not good enough. You look like you've been playing this game for hours, aren't you tired?
Housemate (1) : Nope, i'm still as agile as a monkey because this game is really interesting.
Me: Ohh..really? How interesting is it?
Housemate (1): Cause it's not as boring as the other games
Me: ??
His words pondered me for a moment. Basically, he used Petio Principii on me. Interesting = Not Boring. Simile was also used in the conversation 'as agile as a monkey' which means he's still very active person.

Global Warming....

Global warming has become an issue that everyone is talking about lately. Natural disasters, unpleasant climate changes, increase in diseases are the impacts that a Global Warming has bring us to. This two videos that i found might be interesting to bring awareness of what is changing around us.

Based on that video above, it provides me with explicit knowledge which is documented within formal knowledge. From that, i am aware of what is going on with our mother earth and hopefully it brings awareness to the others on what causes global warming, the effects of global warming, and how can we change the world into a better place. Towards the end of the video, (6:25) 'I think Earth and all it's inhabitants are worth saving, don't you?' this is one of the example of Rhetorical Question as it is tryin g to encourage someone to agree with it.

Recently come of the countries around the world has taken their responsibility in making the Earth a better place. This video provides us explicit knowledge on how this Earth Hour campaign can help the environment. The Earth Hour campaign managed to reduce the usage of energy for up to 10.2% in the city which is equivalent to taking 48000 cars of the road. Let's make a difference.

Just an ordinary day......

Came across this video and found some elements that is relateted to critical thinkin.

From that video, Dilbert (red-and-black striped tie curves upward )was arguing that there's no such thing as chronic cubicle syndrome but Dogbert (Dilbert's pet dog) supported his argument using anecdotes evidence. Dilbert then argued that people will only believe if there's scientific evidence but claims he's too buzy to read those evidence if there's any. Dogbert then used Fallacy of Hasty Generalization by saying 'so i tell people they have chronic cubicle syndrome they would not believe because they are buzy like you (Dilbert) '

hOme is Where Our Heart is...

Finally, I'm back home!, there were tons of assignments and midterm to prepare before this and finally it's all done and finals is the only matter left to worry about. It's been a month since i last came back and be with my family and as i drove back i was filled with excitement and relieved because i'll be able to spend quality time with my parents without worrying much about studies for this short period of time.

Critical Thinking and Application in Management: Went through three levels of feelings which are sensations --> emotions --> interpretations where i was driving back home with excitement and relieved as i could see my family and spend time with them.

Now i'm just slacking around at home, feeling comfortable. Then i came across this article as i was reading the 'The Star Online'.

50% of Malaysians could be overweight, says minister

By AUDREY EDWARDS

PETALING JAYA: The perennial dilemma of overweight and obese Malaysian adults does not seem to be improving with the Health Ministry expressing fears that more than 50% of Malaysian adults could now be saddled with the problem.

Its minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said while the National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2006 revealed the combined prevalence of overweight and obese adults was 43.1% - almost double the figure a decade ago, the current numbers could have already increased over the past two years.

The estimated number of Malaysian adults above the age of 20 is about 13 million.

Liow pinned the disturbing situation down to the lack of proper health knowledge where Malaysians need to be better informed and motivated to stay healthy in terms of diet, physical activity, stress management and disease prevention.

He said Malaysians had also grown accustomed to an affluent lifestyle where they were more comfortable sitting at home and watching television or being in front of the computer instead of enjoying the great outdoors.

"For example, how many people know that losing even a modest 5% to 10% of their weight can result in reduced sickness and death?" he said in his speech Saturday when launching Nutrition Month Malaysia 2008.

Liow, who took a jibe at his own weight problem where he weighed 75kg instead of the desired 70kg, added that Malaysians took "eating right" lightly where they did not know what to eat, when to do so and how much they should consume.

"There is plenty to eat but, unfortunately, many of us are not making wise decisions with regards to what and how much we should eat. Instead of using common sense, we act on impulse," he added.

"With our busy lifestyles, we would rather eat out than at home, opt for fast food rather than cook at home. And, too often, we spare little thought about the health and nutritional value of what we put into our tummies, if we remember to eat at all."

Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity president Prof Dr Mohd Ismail Noor later revealed that about 90% of overweight and obese adults in the country were "very likely" to develop diabetes.

"What is worrying is that younger people who have diabetes and are also overweight. You do not have to wait until you are 40 to have this disease. They are now as young as 25," he said.

He warned the problem had to be nipped in the bud because the combined access to food 24 hours a day and lack of exercise was a "recipe for disaster".

"Look at the West. They have promotional health campaigns and yet it is not working there," he said.

He also said if one parent is overweight or obese, the chances of the child being in a similar situation was 40%.

The chances increased to 80% if both parents are either overweight or obese, he said.

Genetic predisposition, he said contributed to between 10% and 15% of those who faced the weighty problem in the country.

Hence, this article has prompt me to relate it with my critical thinking studies,

The Main Claim: "The perennial dilemma of overweight and obese Malaysian adults does not seem to be improving with the Health Ministry expressing fears that more than 50% of Malaysian adults could now be saddled with the problem."

Premise 1: Datuk Liow Tiong Lai pointed out that most Malaysians has little knowledge on health care where is he used a leading question of how many people know that losing even a modest 5% to 10% of their weight can result in reduced sickness and death?.

Supporting Argument 1: Liow pinned the disturbing situation down to the lack of proper health knowledge where Malaysians need to be better informed and motivated to stay healthy in terms of diet, physical activity, stress management and disease prevention. He said Malaysians had also grown accustomed to an affluent lifestyle where they were more comfortable sitting at home and watching television or being in front of the computer instead of enjoying the great outdoors.

Premise 2: Datuk Liow, who took a jibe at his own weight problem where he weighed 75kg instead of the desired 70kg, added that Malaysians took "eating right" lightly where they did not know what to eat, when to do so and how much they should consume.

Supporting Argument 2: There is plenty to eat but, unfortunately, many of us are not making wise decisions with regards to what and how much we should eat. Instead of using common sense, we act on impulse," he added. "With our busy lifestyles, we would rather eat out than at home, opt for fast food rather than cook at home. And, too often, we spare little thought about the health and nutritional value of what we put into our tummies, if we remember to eat at all.

Frustration!...

Yet, nothing much really happen today except for my principles of marketing midterm paper just now. The paper was fine but struggled a little for my essay part where i had to go against time the whole time to finish up the paper. Guess i wasted too much time on my multi-choice questions, bad move. Today i had i conversation with my friend through online and at one moment our conversation goes like this...

Chong: Bad things always heppen to me after i come back from Melacca because i've been hexed.

tKe (Me): *laughing*..Well my friend, you do know very well that its not true..haha..

Based on the conversation something which i learnt from the critical thinking class struct my mind. It's a Post Hoc Fallacy!..

A tiring day....

Thursdays has always been the busiest day in my schedule. Having classes from 10am till 10pm and it's torturing me especially when i have a marketing midterm paper tomorrow. Fortunately, i had a great time in critical thinking class today having to learn how to blog as this is my first time blogging. Today's marketing class was interesting too. During the marketing lecture, we were bugging the lecturer for tips on tomorrow's paper but instead we were only told to study hard. At the end of the class, a classmate of mine asked the marketing lecturer on whether is it sufficient to prepare ourselves just by reading the slides. Mr Neerjang Lama, our marketing lecturer then answered "if passing the paper is your main target, then reading only the slides is sufficient. Without reading the textbook, therefore getting good marks will not be possible". Based on the lecturer's comment it shows that he is using deductive reasoning of modus ponens (affirming the antecedent) where getting good marks will not be possible if we were to read just the slides.
